Albert Einstein Biography / The Making of a Genius

Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist born on March 14, 1879 into a non-practicing Jewish family in Ulm, in the Kingdom of Württemberg, Germany. While he was an infant, the family moved from Ulm to Munich where the family set up a business manufacturing electrical apparatus.

The business eventually went bankrupt, prompting the family to move to Milan, Italy.

It was during this time that Einstein decided to renounce his German citizenship. Without finishing high school, he tried to enrol at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Zurich Polytechnic) to pursue a course on electrical engineering.

He failed the entrance examination, however, so he went to Aarau for his secondary schooling.

After graduation, Einstein went back to the Zurich Polytechnic to be trained as a teacher in physics and mathematics. He obtained his diploma in 1901, the same year he acquired his Swiss citizenship.
For two years, Einstein tried but failed to secure a teaching post, so he accepted a position as technical assistant at the Swiss Patent Office in Bern. While having his fulltime job, Einstein published many papers on theoretical physics. He submitted one of his scientific papers to the University of Zurich in 1905 to obtain a doctorate degree at the age of 26.

Three years later, he submitted another paper to the University of Bern where he became a lecturer. The following year, he became a regular associate professor of physics at the University of Zurich.


Albert Einstein Biography / The Loves of Einstein

While finishing secondary school in Aarau, Switzerland, Einstein took lodging at the house of Professor Jost Winteler, and fell in love with the latter’s daughter, Marie. Nothing was said to have come about this teenage love, and by the time Einstein was studying at the Zurich Polytechnic, Marie was teaching in Olsberg, Switzerland.

While at Zurich Polytechnic, Einstein met his future wife, Mileva Maric. The two married in 1903, and had a daughter, Lieserl, and two sons, Hans Albert and Eduard. 

The couple’s marriage ended in divorce in 1919, and on the same year, Einstein married his maternal first cousin and paternal second cousin, Elsa Löwenthal. The two did not have any children, although Löwenthal had two daughters from her first marriage.

The year 1905 was dubbed as Einstein’s “Wonderful Year” as it was during this time that he produced four scientific papers (Annus Mirabilis Papers) that were published in the leading German physics journal, Annalen der Physik. These papers were produced while he was working at the patent office. 

The ideas discussed in the papers are as follows:

• Building on the notion that Max Planck introduced about the particulate nature of light, Einstein postulated that light interacts with matter as discrete “packets” or quanta of energy. This was groundbreaking in the sense that it contradicted the wave theories of light at that time.
  
  
• He also expanded the Brownian motion of very small objects moving randomly as a result of molecular action. This idea supports the atomic theory.
  
  
• He introduced the idea of special relativity in his paper on the electrodynamics of moving bodies. Einstein discussed the independence of the speed of light on the observer’s state of motion.
  
  
• His paper on mass-energy equivalence as expressed in the equation, E=mc2, suggested that minimal amounts of mass can be converted into massive amounts of energy. This idea provided the theoretical framework for the development of the nuclear bomb.
  
  

Albert Einstein Biography / More Milestones in Einstein’s Career

After 1905, Einstein continued to gain renown in the field of science. The following milestones sealed his reputation as a force to reckon with in the field of physics:

• In 1909, Einstein published a paper on the quantization of light. This paper introduced the concept of photon which inspired the idea of wave-particle duality in Quantum Physics.
  
  
• In 1910, he published a paper on critical opalescence which answered the question, “Why is the sky blue?” The paper stated that individual molecules in the atmosphere are responsible for the scattering of light.
  
  
• In 1911, he published a paper on the effect of gravity on light.
  
  
• In 1915, Einstein published his General Theory of Relativity which explains gravity as a result of matter distorting the structure of space-time.
  
  
• In 1917, he published a paper exploring the possibility of stimulated emission, and another paper on the cosmological constant.
  
  
• A 1919 photograph of an eclipse taken during the Arthur Stanley Eddington’s expedition validated Einstein’s notion about the gravitational bending of light.
  
  

Albert Einstein Biography / The Nobel Prize in Physics

In 1922, Einstein received the Nobel Prize in physics for his exemplary work on theoretical physics, particularly his discovery of the photoelectric effect.

After he released his work on general relativity, Einstein focused on his unified field theory. This theory sought to simplify and unify the laws of physics, particularly gravitation and electromagnetism, through a single set of equations. His efforts, however, proved unsuccessful.

Einstein died of aneurysm on April 17, 1955 at the age of 76. His remains were cremated and his ashes scattered. Before the cremation, authorities of Princeton Hospital where he died removed his brain and preserved this for future studies on his brilliance.

The Albert Einstein Memorial, a 21-foot bronze statue dedicated in 1979, now stands at the Washington, D.C. campus of the United State’s National Academy of Sciences.

In his lifetime, Einstein published more than 300 scientific papers and more than 150 non-scientific ones. He was named Time magazine’s "Person of the Century" in 1999. In modern parlance, the name “Einstein” has become synonymous with genius.
