Capitalism and Freedom /The Misunderstanding
Having a heart and being a capitalist are not mutually exclusive.
As a business owner, I believe that it is the right of every human being to live a life that reflects his (or her) vision and mission. And if that means working for someone else, that’s great too. The key is that we have the choice to follow our hearts and minds.
Capitalism and Freedom / The Search for Abundance
Have you ever seen the movie, Wall Street? In the film the movie’s villain and main character, Gordon Gekko, says, "Greed is Good.” Many of us cringed when we first heard this speech. Gekko is easy to dislike because of pursuit of abundance at all costs.
The search for abundance is a healthy undertaking, but when we lose our integrity, this search for abundance becomes greed, and the byproduct of greed many times causes despair. Things such as the loss of jobs, loss of savings, loss of homes, and the loss of self-worth.
With this loss, comes a feeling of not being able to do anything. In other words we begin to feel powerless against a government that was meant to protect us. And so it seems our founding fathers had the right idea in implementing a ‘checks and balances’ so many years ago.
Capitalism and Freedom / Today and the Future
Things have changed a lot since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Some would say that we’ve lost our way, while others may say we’ve come along way (in a very positive direction). Both camps are correct. Our technological advances are mind-blowing, and yet we have lost much in the way of personal interaction.
As in most situations there are two sides of the continuum. And, as in human beings, we have two sides. Once focus is given to one side over the other than circumstances will begin that reflect that side.
So, in the case of capitalism, why not focus on the way it can help us build a life that is our own. We are able to make choices that reflect who we are at the core, and to give back to the country and the world in which we live.
Capitalism and Freedom / Living With Grace
We all are personally responsible for our future, and if we defer that power, then we willingly and consciously give to others. How do we create and manifest what we desire? We do it by being present and by being conscious of the thoughts, words and actions that we demonstrate moment to moment.
Is this easy? No, it takes a great deal of self-discipline and faith. It is very true that we do not always get what we want, but what we do get what we focus on... so, the question then becomes, why focus on lack when there is so much good within our reach.
Living with grace and having integrity does not contradict the principles of free enterprise and capitalism; it only enhances them. Self-responsibility, free choice, and true freedom will hold steady in so much as we remain true to the purest part of ourselves.
