College Stress / Can You Feel the Pressure?

College stress is one of the not-so-pleasant highlights of any person’s college life, and one of the most common types of stress. There is no better place for a young adult to experience stress than in college. College is just outright stressful. There are a ton of things that need to be done:  classes to attend, projects to submit, exams to pass, a thesis to complete. Teenage stress (and you older college kids, too!) is like an annoying tick that you can’t get rid of.

What exactly makes college life stressful? Here are some thoughts on the main causes of college stress:

  • Too much to do in a short span of time - Yep, it happens to every single college student on the planet. This does not only mean academic tasks like exams, lab reports and projects but also extra-curricular activities. Teenage stress is normal, but there are things you can do to battle the symptoms of stress.

And who could ever forget those demanding professors who give out tons of homework with not nearly enough time to finish. You remember them... the ones that don't give out As unless you pour every shred of spare time into their class. Organizations, fraternities, sororities also eat up much of a student’s time. Part-time or full-time jobs are factors for college stress as well.

  • Budgeting allowance - Another major cause of college and teenage stress is learning proper budgeting techniques. I remember having to eat instant noodles for one solid year because of faulty budgeting.
  • Peer pressure - College is a period in a person’s life to prove his/her independence; they want to fit in and get along with everyone. Showing independence somehow affirms their status in the college society.

College stress pops up when too much pressure from friends or family to engage in a certain activity conflicts with one’s perspective. Although it may seem logical to assert a point of view, the need to be liked wins out. And, in the end, the spirit of the individual is buried.

  • Parents – Parents expectations (which are sometimes impossible to meet) add up to an already toxic level of college stress. The parents influence can be especially stressful when ultimatums are presented. Many times the parents are the ones footing the bills, and therefore expect to be the ones making the decisions.

Given all these potential stressors, it can really be a challenge to manage college stress. There is no magic formula for managing school stress but here are some helpful ways to be back in shape in no time when the symptoms of stress rear their ugly head:

  • Figure out what your major stressor are – this will enable you to at least assess what these stressors are, giving you the chance to plan in order to avoid or at least lessen them.

  • Do not make unnecessary appointments – be very careful with appointments you are committing to. Never say 'ye's unless you are sure of your availability and other responsibilities.

  • Find time to do what you enjoy doing (e.g. sports, crafts) – this a very effective way to reduce college stress. Doing sports or hanging out with friends reduces the pressure that college brings. It makes one relax and places the focus on something creative and free-flowing.

  • Develop and deepen your sense of humor – it never hurts to laugh at your problems once in a while. This attitude actually helps one to have a more positive perspective in life. Avoid negativism and pessimism as much as possible.

  • Prioritize activities and responsibilities – make a detailed prioritized list of the things you need to do according. Do not forget to specify a reachable and realistic time-frame for each line item.

  • Have some trusted friends or family to talk to – college and teenage stress can really make one feel isolated. That is why there is a need for a trusted friend or family to lean on when the things been to spiral. Verbalization of feelings helps one to realize his/her strengths and weaknesses and then from there steps can be taken to alleviate the problem.

No matter how stressful college may get, it still is one of the most fun and memorable times in one’s life. The stresses that college brings are actually blessings in disguise. College stress helps and prepares one to face more complex stress that presents itself in the workplace. So for those who are still in college, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.
