One of the most famous definitions of stress comes from stress expert, Dr. Hans Selye. He was the first to use the word stress and defined it as a nonspecific response of the body to a demand. In this definition, stress is the reaction of the body to certain demands which are known as stressors. This is a very widely used definition of stress in medical textbooks.
Stressors are forces that affect individuals, thus resulting in a certain response. Stressors may come from within us or from the outside world. Internal stressors may be psychological in nature. High expectations for oneself could be an example of internal stressor. On the other hand, the more common external stressors are of a wider scope. Performing on stage or public speaking are two examples. Another example may be being trapped in a burning building.

An important thought to note is that stress may be advantageous to a person. Certain stresses can actually help us grow as individuals. When one overcomes stress, it adds to a person’s sense of accomplishment. Examples of this are college stress and performance stress.
Conversely, if not resolved properly, stress can cause more serious health issues. Chronic and unmanageable stresses are the most damaging types.

Definition of Stress / How do you manage it when you feel like you can't?
Combating stress is a struggle for some individuals. Certain responses to stressors can vary from person to person. Some people are more at risk to react more to a certain stressors. Others may view the same stressor as less than threatening.
If you are the type of person that gets set in his (or her) ways, sometimes it may take somebody else to snap you out of it. This person could even be a stranger. A trigger must be set off, and the person that triggers it may not know they "are letting you have it."
The person being targeting needs to become aware of what is happening in order to do something about it. Many times the Universe has a way of helping us get out of ruts by providing a contradictory person or an unpleasant circumstance in our path. This catalyst will probably cause us even more stress. But the truth is, it is better to work through uncomfortable stress than live with the kind of stress that numbs.

Another definition if stress is from Dr. Kirsti Dyer. She defined stress as the body’s reaction to a change that requires a physical, mental or emotional adjustment or response. Any situation or thought that brings about anxiety, anger, fear, or frustration can cause stress. Many young people in their teens when going dealing with peer pressure and unreasonable parents' expectations may experience teenage stress.
One of the most basic definition of stress is a feeling that's created when a person reacts to particular events. It is one of the ways the body prepares itself for an impending challenge or tough situation through the fight or flight response. This is a response made by our body in an effort to battle stress.
When an immense level of stress is being experienced, either of the two responses, fight or flight, takes into action. That certain stressor may be the driving force of the body to have more focus, power, strength, and endurance. This could precisely explain the phenomenon of adrenaline rush when in emergent situations.
Our bodies were designed that way to protect us. The problem is many folks react strongly to circumstances that do not place them in danger. They may over-dramatize situations so that everyday happenings become a personal attack.
And if the stress becomes too great to handle, the individual might “fly” away. This explains the incident of people who 'freeze' upon facing a grave stressor. If not managed properly, prolonged or chronic stress may be fatal.
Perspective is needed in our lives. We need to understand that the person that cut us off on the freeway is caught up in his own problems and he is not out to get us. Each scenario that plays out before us, has a story that developed long before we entered the scene. It's best if we just observe, and not react.

Stress is normal in life. Without stress, life would be monotonous and unchallenging. Stress gives us opportunities to grow and discover new ways to improve as a person. It could even make us better individuals if we are able to learn proper coping techniques.
That definitely deserves a little "Thank you." An expression of gratitude goes a long way is relieving stress. Try it, and you will will see what we mean.
