Interesting Facts About Albert Einstein / Delving into the past of the creative genuis

Want some interesting facts about Albert Einstein? Let's see...so far we have covered the Albert Einsteing Biography, details on the Albert Einstein Memorial, we have supplied you with the best Albert Einstein Quotes, and we have supplied you with the real (often misunderstood) answer to the question: "What did Albert Einstein Invent?". We have even delved into the heady topic of the Theory of Relativity and Physics.

Enough about those mind-boggling theories of Relativity and Quantum Physics! This time, let’s look at the lighter side of this Nobel Prize winner and absentminded genius. So here are, the bizarre, sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, but always interesting facts about Albert Einstein.

For example, do you know that Einstein was considered a slow learner when he was young? Seems unlikely for someone whose brain is now being dissected for clues to his exceptional intelligence, isn’t it? Yet, Einstein only learned to speak when he was three years old. He spoke very slowly, groping for words, so much so that his parents thought he was retarded!

Otto Neugebauer, a science historian, offered some of the most amusing facts about Albert Einstein:
“As he was a late talker, his parents were worried. At last, at the supper table one night, he broke his silence to say, ‘The soup is too hot.’ Greatly relieved, his parents asked why he had never said a word before. Albert replied, "Because up to now everything was in order."

You would ask, “Why include not so favorable facts about Albert Einstein?” Well, he may be a genius, but he was definitely no saint. This page seeks to present the human side of Einstein, his eccentricities, his love of women, his love of music—anything and everything that depicts Einstein’s human fallibility.
Now, doesn’t that little fact above whet your appetite? Here are more interesting facts about Albert Einstein.

Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / Extraordinary Child

  • He was a fat, cuddly baby with a rather big and oddly shaped head. His parents were alarmed at first until the physician assured them that the boy’s head would become more regular in shape in a few weeks, which, thankfully, it did.

  • His interest in science was triggered by a compass his father gave him when he was five years old. He was so fascinated by the fact that whichever way the case was turned, the needle always pointed in the same direction.

Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / The Family Man

  • He had an illegitimate daughter, named Liserl, with Mileva Maric whom he later married. The fate of Liserl remained unknown up to this day. Some say she died of scarlet fever as an infant; some say she was put up for adoption.

  • Before their divorce, he made Maric agree to a strange contract while they stayed together under one roof. The agreement included having his clothes clean and in order, getting his meals brought to his room three times daily, having no intimate relations with his wife, and Maric agreeing to stop talking to Einstein if he so requested it.
  • He had a stormy relationship with his oldest son, Hans Albert. Hans resented his father’s treatment of his mother, and the fact that when Einstein won the Nobel Prize for physics, Einstein only gave Maric the accrued interest rather than the principal sum. Also, Einstein objected to his son’s choice of a wife whom he thought was unattractive and much older for Hans.

  • Einstein married his first cousin (and paternal second cousin) Elsa Lowenthal.

  • Einstein was a Cassanova! Previously released letters showed that he was involved with six different women while married to Lowenthal. Some of the women were referred to by Einstein as Estella, Ethel, Toni, and Margarita. Sometimes he would refer to them only by their initials. "It is true that M. followed me (to England) and her chasing after me is getting out of control," he wrote in a letter to Margot in 1931. "

Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / Personal Grooming

  • The deeper Einstein got into his quest for the fundamental theories of physics and the more known he became, the messier his hair got! Queried about his hair which looked like he had stuck a finger into a light socket, Einstein reportedly quipped, “"It is the result of doing nothing with it."

  • He liked his feet bare and had a well-known loathing for socks. "When I was young, I found out that the big toe always ends up making a hole in the sock. So, I stopped wearing socks," he said.

Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / The Absentminded Genius

  • Einstein was absentminded, in fact, he became an “icon for distractedness.” While travelling on a train in Germany, the conductor approached him, so Einstein started searching his pockets for the ticket.

The conductor recognized the famous physicist and told him he could ride the train for free.  “Thank you," Einstein told him. "But if I don´t find my ticket I won't know where to get off the train.”

  • A few days after the young Einstein stayed at his friend’s house, his friend’s mother rang Einstein’s mother.

“I am sorry to say that your son will never amount to anything," she told Einstein's mom. "He always forgets his things. I have his suitcase, if you're wondering.”

  • He had a hard time remembering birthdays, including those of girlfriends and family members. In a letter he wrote to then girlfriend Maric, Einstein said, "My dear little sweetheart ... first, my belated cordial congratulations on your birthday yesterday, which I forgot once again."

Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / Shows His Disdain for the Paparazzi

  • More than half a century before the word “paparazzi” came to describe annoying press people hounding celebrities, Einstein was already bothered by them.
  • The good thing was that, the reluctant celebrity found a clever way to deflect the attention.

As he would often get stopped on the street by people asking him to explain “that theory,” Einstein would tell them, “"Pardon me, sorry!

Always I am mistaken for Professor Einstein.”

  • His frustration over the paparazzi came to a head on his birthday so he stuck out his tongue to try to ruin the photo.

If anything, the photograph only fuelled more media frenzy over him, and it was seen as yet another display of Einstein’s playfulness. It became one of the most famous photographs ever taken of him.

Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / Einstein’s Brain

  • His brain was removed within seven hours after his death in April 1955 to provide clues to his intelligence. Slices of the brain were sent to various scientists around the world. One scientist reported that compared to that of a normal person, Einstein’s brain had more glial cells in the region responsible for synthesizing information.

Another scientist discovered that Einstein’s brain lacked a particular “wrinkle” in one region which seemed to suggest that his brain neurons communicated better with each other. A third scientist remarked that the lobe associated with mathematical ability was more pronounced that that of normal brains.

  • His brain has been kept in a jar for years and was once driven at the trunk of a Buick on a cross-country trip to California.

Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / His Love of Silence and Peace

  • Einstein liked to work in complete silence so much so that he barred telephones from one of the houses he lived in.

Anyone who wanted to speak to him on the phone  had to call Einstein’s neighbor.

-The picture to the left is of his study in his summer home in Berlin.-

  • He considered himself a pacifist. His famous equation, E=mc2, which led to the invention of the atomic bomb was never meant for that purpose.

Also, sources say that when Einstein urged President Roosevelt to develop the nuclear weapon, that was only meant to be a threat to Europe which was then reportedly developing their own atomic bomb.

More Interesting Facts about Albert Einstein / Bringing it Back Home

  • For all his brilliance, Einstein never learned how to drive a car! Instead, he was often seen riding a bicycle or walking.

  • He smoked a lot. He was a life member of the Montreal Pipe Smokers Club. While sailing with friends one day, Einstein fell overboard, but he refused to let go of his pipe.
  • He enjoyed sailing and playing the violin.

  • Like Newton, Einstein was suspected of being autistic or having Asperger Syndrome. Some of the bases for linking him to Asperger included his apparent lack of social skills, and his analytical inclination and preoccupation with complex subjects like music. The only reason why some doubt that he had autism was his sense of humor, a trait not apparent in known cases of autism.

Albert Einstein may be a colossal figure in science, but like you and me, he had his own quirks. Hopefully, these interesting facts about Albert Einstein provided clues as to what made this genius tick.
