Japa Meditation / Stress and Questions

We have been led to believe that we live in a stress filled world, and that this is normal.  Come to think of it, who doesn’t have problems? Who doesn’t have stress? And how does stress affect health? Are there people out there who actually live stress-free?

Japa Meditation / What's With All the Questions

Yes, stress is a part of life and yes, problems will always arise but does this mean that we constantly have to struggle against the hurdles life gives us? Do we have to live in a constant state of anxiety, worry and depression because of our problems? Of course not! There are plenty of ways to handle our problems and the stress that comes along with those problems.

There are, in fact, peaceful, efficient and inexpensive “solutions” to our everyday hitches and strikes. We are talking about meditation. There are many types of meditation, but let's focus on just one for now, the one know as Japa.

Japa Meditation / Quick and Easy

Japa meditation has been around for thousands of years.  This method of meditation originated in India.  Jap means “to utter in a low voice” or “to mutter” in ancient Sanskrit.  The practice of Japa centers on a mantra or repeated word.  This word is can be the name of god or the names of the divine.

The most common mantra is “Ahh” or “Aum” (pronounced Ahh-hou-mm), since the sound is present in almost all names we call supreme beings like Yahweh, Allah, Krishna, Ra or Buddha.  The chanting of the mantra helps the mind focus on the meditation.   It also invokes respect or love for those supreme beings helping the practitioner relax and communicate with them at the same time.

Hindu devotees who practice Japa carry around Japa Mala or Japa Beads.  This string of beads consists of 108 individual beads with a larger one to mark the beginning or end.  A bead is released after saying a mantra and the practitioner goes to the next bead, helping focus the mind on the meditation process.  However, Japa can be done without the assistance of the Japa Mala.

I found a quick and easy way to practice Japa.  This method is a little different from the way traditionalists practice Japa but the basic principles are intact.  It can be done in a meditative posture or simply by sitting comfortably.  We begin by closing our eyes and picturing the letter A in our mind’s eye.

See the letter clearly and distinctly.  If you find your thoughts wandering or you feel your concentration slipping, gently remind yourself of the task at hand and bring your consciousness back to the letter A.  On the right side of the letter A, picture the letter B.  Again, make sure that the letter is clear and distinct.  Without losing sight of the letters A and B focus on the space between the two letters, then say your mantra.

Say “Ahh” and try saying it for as long as you can.  When you say your mantra, feel the sound as it goes out of your throat, as you hear it; listen to the sound of your voice as you are saying “Ahh”.  Repeat it for another time while maintaining your focus on your voice and mantra.  Next, picture the letter C on the right side of the letter B.  Do not forget to focus on the letters and see them in your mind.  Again focus on the space between the two letters and say your mantra.  Repeat this process until you get to the letter G.

Japa Meditation / Anywhere, Anytime

Japa can be done anywhere and anytime.  The most important thing to remember about meditation is that you are in control of the situation.  You can practice Japa in the train on the way to work, while stuck in traffic or during any down time you might have.

Imagine that you are waiting for the light to go green and that you are late in picking up your kids from soccer.  You can either fidget and silently curse the traffic light or you can take the two minutes it takes for the light to change and do a little Japa.

Either way you will arrive a couple minutes late. The difference is if you continue to focus on the light not changing fast enough, you will arrive at your destination in an irritated state and will take it out on your kids, but if you take the time to do a little mini-meditation, you will arrive to greet your kids in a more loving and peaceful way.

Japa Meditation / A Peaceful State of Mind

And this is what Japa and meditation is all about - a more peaceful state of mind.  But meditation is not just a short fix for problematic and stressed-out individuals.  Meditation has been a proven technique that improves health, brain function and the general overall wellness of people.

People who meditate at least 20 minutes a day are also more efficient at work because the mind is clear and focused on tasks and assignments.  They are generally happier because stress has been reduced and focus is taken off things that we have no control over. Japa Meditation is a discipline that helps keep individual focused on the present, and when an individual is in the present there is a greater capacity to be more productive and to be happier.

Japa Meditation / Don’t Let Stress Get in the Way

Stress can put a great deal of stress on our relationships.  Stress from the office is brought to home and stress from the home is brought to the office.  Because of this endless cycle relationships with our friends, coworkers and family suffer.  It is easy for us to just give and and claim... "that's the way it is." But the truth of the matter is, there is a better way, and it's not that big a leap to get the calmer, happier side.

We get to take a break and say “This is for me”.  Japa meditation helps us reconnect with ourselve and with our friends and loved oness by focusing our attention inward instead of the outside environment.  When emerging from meditation, we feel refreshed, rejuvenated and relaxed; enabling us to tackle problems and stress in a more peaceful and efficient manner.
