How aware are you?

Can you recognize the symptoms of stress? If you are not sure, it is time to get educated. Stress not only affects your health, it can reduce the amount of joy you are able to get from life. That's why it is so important to cultivate the ability to tune into how your body is feeling. There are many practices, like chi meditation and japa meditaion (plus many more!), that have been extremely effective in helping people gain this awareness.

How Does Stress Affect Health?

That bring us to this issue of stress. If you were ever curious about this question: "How does stress affect health?" - Good for you! Caring about an issue is the first step to resolving its affects. In studying the different types of stress and their symptoms, you will be in a better position to manage them.

Different Types of Stress / What is your Threshold?

Stress remains to be one of the top causes of chronic illnesses worldwide. Stress (although most of the time unwanted) can be beneficial, especially when experienced in small amounts.

Symptoms of stress are based upon the individual. This is due to the fact that just like pain, each individual has a different stress threshold. Symptoms of stress also depend upon the person's age, gender, outlook and lifestyle.

Different Types of Stress / Where do you Fit in?

Whether you are dealing with teenage stress, work stress, time management stress, college stress, new mom stress, or some other stress, it is helpful to be able to figure out where it originated.

It is always beneficial to know the symptoms of stress to be able to promptly recognize one’s stress potential. The symptoms of stress could be classified into these types of stress: emotional, cognitive, physical and behavioral. Here are some of the most common symptoms of stress to be aware of:

Physical symptoms:

  • Bodily pains – chest pains, muscle tension
  • Diarrhea – or possibly constipation
  • Nausea - or possibly vomiting
  • Dizziness or light headedness – one must be cautious when operating machineries or driving a car
  • Palpitations – awareness of abnormal heart beats
  • Decreased libido or sex drive
  • Susceptibility to infections – especially true with viral infections i.e. colds

Emotional symptoms:

  • Agitation - inability to relax or keep cool
  • Short-tempered- easily agitated
  • Moodiness or frequent mood swings (for women)
  • Feelings of anxiety – could include uneasiness or restlessness
  • Depression – generalized feeling of loneliness with no interest in the surrounding world
  • feelings of isolation  - may willingly seclude self from others

Behavioral symptoms:

  • lack of appetite or over eating – eating too much or too little in relation to previous eating habits
  • disturbed sleeping patterns – may oversleep or have difficulty of sleeping
  • use of alcohol, drugs, or cigarettes – this is a desperate move to lessen stress
  • Procrastination – delaying of actions to a later time
  • Neglecting duties –may have a carefree attitude towards work

Cognitive symptoms:

  • Poor memory – may be evident with decreased work output
  • Negativism – person may be too pessimistic about a certain matter or life in general
  • Poor concentration – attention deficit which leads to communication problems
  • Poor judgment – inability to weigh advantages, disadvantages, or other alternatives prior to making a decision; hastily decide on important matters
  • Worries constantly – unable to find time for other activities or duties due to constant worrying or fixation on worrying about certain things

A person doesn’t need to experience all these symptoms to be diagnosed with stress. As mentioned earlier, people respond differently to stressors. It may be possible that a certain person may only show one of these symptoms but is indeed in a state of stress. The development of the symptoms of stress needs to be seen on a person-to-person basis.

One should also keep in mind that these symptoms can be symptoms of other disease states. Once these symptoms are observed, it is not advised to quickly assume that a person is experiencing stress. The best action to take is still to consult a physician to know exactly what your problem may be. This does not only spare you from worrying but also ensures proper medical management.
