Teen life, as easy as it may seem, is actually very complicated. And lot of these complications usually cause stress. So what exactly are the causes and symptoms of stress among teens?
Here are some roots to the symptoms of teenage stress:
- Physical changes – teenage years are one of the most important years in life in the sense that the body is fully developed to its reproductive potential. Numerous bodily changes which cause teenage stress come along with this. Generally speaking, teens experience stress because of alterations in image.
The teen might have a bad case of acne, is way too tall or short for his/her age, obese or skinny, and the likes. Other teens tend to ostracize affected teens because of their appearances and this could likely be one of the major causes of teenage stress.
- Peer pressure – this is the time when most teenagers seem to know what is right but are actually wrong. Needing to fit in is a major cause of teenage stress. Teens tend to do stupid things just to land a spot in the world of the cool and popular. When these needs are not met, stress tends to build up.
- Family vs. Friends – conflict between family and friends could get pretty ugly. The teen is being sandwiched between two opposing pressures. The teenager usually is in total confusion as to who to listen to.
- School work – this adds up to teenage stress since school nowadays demands more from students. Although it may be true that there are a lot of resources for school work, too much tends to complicate and confuse the students with information overload.
The stress of high school can be great, but college stress, and the expectations that come with college, can really keep you hopping. A great tool that we discovered may help keeping up with your studies a whole lot easier, and a lot more enjoyable. To find out about this cool tool go to the What is Mind Mapping page.
- Career decisions – sooner or later, the teen is faced with a serious dilemma of choosing career paths. This tends to be very stressful since some parents are tough to convince, or sometimes the teen is still unsure of what he/she really wants.

During these times, it is important for a teenager to have a solid and effective coping mechanism to combat stress and avoid breakdowns.
Ways to manage teenage stress:
- Accepting oneself as who you are, imperfections and strengths included – one of the most effective way to lessen teenage stress is to accept yourself as who you are. One has to keep in mind that in order to be helped by others, he must help himself first. There are a number of stress relief games you can play. Many of these games can be done when you need time by yourself.
- Talking to support people for advice – a teen has a lot of people at his disposal to talk to. First, there is always family. Second are friends, buddies or classmates. Lastly, there are teachers or school guidance counsellors who are more than willing to help.
And for those of you on the shy side try participating in social networking websites, blogs, and online forums. Just Google a topic that interests you and you will have a slew of activities to choose from and people to communicate with.
- Taking a break to socialize and enjoy once in a while – having fun once in a while effectively reduces teenage stress especially when done with trusted people. One could have fun through engaging in sports or crafts, shopping with pals, or just hanging at home with family or friends.
- Get enough sleep and exercise – these essential activities release built-up tension, which tends to make a teen more predisposed to stress.
- Eat a balanced diet – this doesn’t only help reduce teenage stress but also ensures proper nutrition during these very important years of development and maturit.y
Stress is becoming extremely prevalent with today’s teens. A lot of teenagers face different stressors one after the other. Some even think that there is no greater stress than being a teen. However, there are still so many wonderful opportunities and experiences a teen can look forward to.
It can be a get comfort for a teenager to find a mentor that he (or she) can mirror. A mentor can be teacher, a coach, or someone in the community who is not only compassionate, but is able to show, through example, that life has much to offer for those that reach for the gold.
