Transcendental Meditation / Experience Alert Restfulness
Do you think you have to work inordinately hard for your money and for your happiness... or for your freedom. Many of us were brought up with the debilitating belief that if we don't work hard, day and night for our piece of the pie, we will lose out. So, we not only have to always have our eye on the prize, we have to watch out that our competitor doesn't get ahead of us. Yikes, I get stressed just writing these words!
This type of thinking poses a huge problem for many people. The way we were raised (and other factors) has caused us to live our lives in a continual state of fear, and unfortuantely the more people that think that way, the more our nation and our world begins to adapt to that consciousness.
This is why we have added these pages on meditation. To achieve the kind of authentic success that makes life worth living it is important to de-stress and go within. We have everything within us to make our lives amazing. We simply must time the time to access it.
Transcendental Meditation / How did it start?
Transcendental Meditation or TM as it is widely called was first introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi fifty years ago. TM centers on a state of “alert restfulness”. Unlike other meditation methods, TM does not need concentration, instead the mind is quieted, but wide awake. This method of meditation is done sitting comfortably with the eyes closed for 20 minutes two times a day.
The Process of Transcendental Meditation
TM is done sitting with the eyes closed. Instruction is given to interested parties. Courses are usually 4-90 minute classes where an instructor guides and teaches the technique. A follow-up is done three months later in order to ensure that the process is done correctly and to ensure that the practitioner reaps the full benefits of TM.
In Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s book The Science of Being and Art of Living TM is described as a mental process that allows the mind to quiet itself. The practitioner is assigned a mantra or sound and is utilized as a thought in the meditation process that directs the mind from the outside physical world into the inner being of the mind.
Basically, the sound draws the practitioner’s attention from the chaotic outside environment and directs it inside the mind where there is quiet and silence. This process allows the practitioner to transcend into another form of consciousness different from wakefulness, dreaming or sleeping. Yogi says that once the mind is in its “quiet” state, the practitioner experiences the thought itself to be transcended allowing the mind to experience deeper levels.
Why Practice TM?
There are many studies and a great deal of scientific research that supports the benefits of Transcendental Meditation. These studies were conducted by scientists, psychologists and researchers and published in medical journals, digests and books. Research into the benefits of TM started in the 1970’s when researchers at Harvard University decided to study the technique and its effects on human physiology.
Amazingly, the researchers discovered that TM practitioners have lower levels of cholesterol, lower blood lactate, decreased basal skin resistance, lower heart rates and respiration. EEG results also found increase coherence and better brain function. The studies found that the brain is asleep but alert at the same time. This is what they call “wakeful hypometabolic state”.
Continuous studies have suggested that people who suffer from asthma, bronchial or pulmonary problems and practiced TM improved their lung function. Researchers have also coined the term “younger biological age” for people who decreased their cholesterol level, decreased insomnia, and reduced illnesses. Alcoholics, smokers and anxiety-driven people also saw significant improvement.
TM does not only improve health, but the brain as well. In 2001 a study published in Intelligence, 362 Taiwanese students were studied. The researchers divided the group into those who would not practice TM but nap in the afternoons, as a break from studying. The other group would meditate via TM instead of napping. The study has shown that TM increases IQ, creativity and general and practical intelligence.
A Wide Range of Benefits
The scientific evidences supporting Transcendental Meditation state that it really does work. It does not only benefit the mind and body but also improves personal relationships and professional performance.
Think about it. When emerging from TM, the mind is rested. Memory, creativity and focus improve, allowing you to efficiently finish tasks and assignments. Health is improved, decreasing medical bills and other expenditures. In general, you experience less stress. This in turn leads to better relationships with peers, friends, co-workers and family. Therefore, the results do not just impact yourself but those around you.
TM is not just for adults. TM can be taught to anybody including children as young as 5 years-old. Children are taught TM through a “word of wisdom” where meditation is done during quiet periods rather than forcing the child to sit still for 20 minutes.
Eating the Pudding
They say “the proof of the pudding is in the eating”. In order to truly understand and reap the benefits of TM, you have to learn it. And since the benefits are natural and spontaneous, the results will just come.
Practice Transcendental Meditation and experience the benefits of a clearer mind, healthier body and better relationships.
