Don't Stress / Are you aligned?
The theme of this site is how to create an alignment with the quantum field so that you and your business can thrive to its potential. This type of adjustment will give you the opportunity to create the kind of life you desire, rather than put you in the position of being the victim of circumstance. In order to live this kind of optimal ife, the issue of stress must be addressed. More specifically - how stress can affect our health and how it can be managed.
And, so it makes sense to us to break down the various types of stress, in order to better zero in on what to do about it. We are probably all familiar with these types of stress: teenage stress, work stress, time management stress, college stress and new-mom stress. But all of these types of stress can be categorized differently. Read on to find out how.
Types of Stress / The good and the bad
Stress could be grouped into different types. Certain types of stress can actually be beneficial. Conversely, other types of stress can result in serious health issues and could sometimes become fatal. It is important to know the different types of stress to be able to understand the body’s adaptive responses.
So what exactly then are the major types of stress? There are currently several types of stress that are being studied, but these types of stress generally fall into the following categories:
- Eustress – this is the type of stress that gives immediate motivation or strength and is usually short-term. It is often regarded as the most useful and beneficial among the major types of stress. This type of stress normally surfaces just right before times of increased physical activity or increased need for concentration and focus.
An example would be an athlete experiencing eustress just before the start of the competition. A student participating in a spelling bee could very well be experiencing eustress. Cramming to review before an exam or to submit a project before deadline is regarded as eustress for certain persons because it produces creativity and/or performance output. This is also known as college stress or teenage stress.
We recently discovered a tool that can help people that suffer from this type of stress. It's called mind mapping, and it offers a way to organize projects or study in a fun and creative way.
- Distress – this is a negative type of stress which is caused by constant change in pre-determined or daily routines. The body is not comfortable with this new routine thus yearning for the familiarity of the previous one. A person who would most likely experience this stress is someone who constantly changes jobs or homes. Alternatively, this type of stress can occur is a person avoids positive change. For instance, a person may hate his job, but takes no action to find a more enjoyable (or even bearable) one.
This kind of stress can lead to depression. Tthe longer a person takes to instigate change, the deeper the grooves of a deadening routine will become. This is the antithesis to the way to a fulfilling life. Do not let yourself go down this road. Instead, learn how conscious and healthy change can be good.
- Hyperstress – this type of stress is brought about by overexertion in a person’s job or daily role. Hyperstress can result when a person is pushed to do more than he can possibly handle. This is likened to major burnout in one’s job or one's station if life. Individuals predisposed to this type of stress are high ranking officials, nurses and doctors on long hours of duty, office employees with tons of workload, and stay-at-home moms.
The individual suffering from this type of stress could develop serious emotional problems. It is recommended that a person suspected of experiencing this type of stress seek help immediately to prevent any severe symptoms. Terms associated with this type of stress are work stress and time management stress.
Techniques like mindful meditation or sound therapy can help this type of stress tremendously.
- Hypostress - Hypostress is the exact opposite of hyperstress. This type of stress is triggered by boredom or monotony in one’s job or activities. People who are affected by hypostress may be uninspired or restless.
Factory workers who perform repetitive tasks are the population most predisposed to this type of stress. This kind of stress numbs the mind and dulls the spirit. If you feel caught up in this type of cycle, find a way to get out of it. Try joining some social networking sites, participating in forums, and making comments on blogs. Start interacting in an unintimidating way and as your comfort level increases, begin to bring in more challenges to light a fire in your belly.
Another classification of the types of stress is related to duration and onset.
Stress can either be acute or chronic:
- Acute Stress – Acute stress has a sudden onset but is usually short-term. It may be intense but passes by quickly. Breathing exercises or the Merkaba Meditation practice will help to alleviate these symptoms of stress.
- Chronic Stress – chronic stress may be experienced for 6 months or longer. This type of stress is a serious matter due to the fact that if it remains unresolved or unmanaged properly, it could result in various health risks and problems. For this type of stress we recommend that you seek the care of a doctor.
Knowing the different ways stress manifests helps one understand and anticipate future stressors. It could very well be helpful in finding the right ways to manage, especially since we will then be in a better position to recoginize the symptoms of stress. And by managing stress, one is in an optimal position to thrive both personally and professionally.
